Single-parent families (see single parents) tend to be financially worse off than two-parent ones. Ninety-one percent of single parents are women. Women’s wages (for mothers who are able to work) average £301 per week, versus £414 for men. Thus families living in one-carer homes are doubly financially disadvantaged and frequently live below the poverty line. Although they are eligible for state benefits such as income support and housing benefit, families at the bottom of the economic pile fall into the trap of not having time or skills to apply for them. The Labour government’s proposal to bring in a minimum wage may not help them.
Underfunded support organizations such as Shelter and Child Poverty Action Group are their best hope.
